There’s a purple bowl in my dishwasher… you might be familiar with it, as you may have a bowl like it too. Or maybe for you, it’s not a bowl but rather a plate or a fork or a cutting knife.
This bowl is a regular sight in my dishwasher, not because it’s my favourite but because every time the dishwasher finishes its cleaning cycle, this bowl is still dirty. So it sits there… awaiting another full load, awaiting the time when it will finally be clean enough to make the journey from dishwasher to cupboard.
Lately I’ve been a bit of a cleaning fanatic. So the other day I decided to take the bowl (and its new friend the potato masher) out of the dishwasher and hand wash them. It felt good knowing that the next time I would open the dishwasher, the purple bowl would no longer be there.
I can’t help but think that there are things in our lives that are like the purple bowl.
We hide them away, hoping that somehow or in some way, they will come out clean without any extra effort.
Perhaps the bowl takes the form of your feelings that were hurt years ago.
Or maybe it’s your career. Perhaps the purple bowl is your dreams or ambitions. Or maybe it’s a strained relationship. Perhaps the purple bowl is a part of your spiritual life.
Whatever it is, maybe today is the day that you take that purple bowl out of the dishwasher, roll up your sleeves, fill the sink with soapy water and lovingly scrub the bowl until it sparkles and shines.

Oh yes, I am sure I have several “purple bowls”. Thanks for the reminder to deal with them.
I loved this so much that I couldn’t wait for my husband to read this himself! lol! I read it to him while he was in the kitchen. :)
The last two paragraphs are perfection! Every line has significance to me, and is relevant in my life (and the lives of my friends) at this very moment. I can not wait to share this…
Thank you, thank you Jennifer, for this contribution to {Magic of the Mundane}!
I am guilty of the “Purple bowl” (both literally and figuratively!) and am hoping to do some scrubbing here in the future!
This is a great post, thanks for sharing!
Yes, we all have a purple bowl lingering and waiting for our attention. I’m so glad you enjoyed this Anne Marie.
Fantastic thought for the day!!
We definitely have one of those in the dishwasher! I’m going to have to take a minute and think about me! ;-)
I think most of us have an item in our dishwasher that needs extra care and often there’s something in our lives that needs attention too.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this Steph.
It is easy to hide things away hoping that next time things will be different. But it’s not until we actually step in and get our hands dirty that things change.
I know there are things I could probably actively make better, but until I find the courage to tackle these things I think the dishwasher is a great place to hide them!
Great post Jennifer, thank you for sharing it and for hosting the #SHINEbloghop.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this Debbie. It was an “undiscovered” piece that I had written a while ago and I’m so glad that it’s being enjoyed now.
Thanks for visiting and for participating in the SHINE Blog Hop.
