I’ve been dreaming of transforming our small yard. This summer we had a tiny little 3′ x 5 ‘ garden. It was just enough space to grow some beans and carrots. We harvested some good crops and the success has me itching for more.
It’s a little embarrassing but this is what our current “garden” space looks like. The grass is overgrown because we can’t get a lawnmower in to cut it. It’s also patchy. Like I said, it’s a bit embarrassing.
The small strip at the back is our garden.
I began to dream of transforming this entire space into a garden. I envision carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, and beans. The other half of the yard has a huge deck and provides more than enough room for outside play, so it’s not like I would be limiting the children. Plus, they love working in the garden! This would allow them more space to do so.
My five-year-old daughter has practical life skills time planned into her homeschool days. I scheduled some time to take her outside. My plan was to get her to help dig up the grass and expand the garden. She loved it and we had several encounters with ladybugs, daddy-long-legs, and worms. Bonus science time! The two-year-old really enjoyed helping as well.
After a productive two hours of work, we finished the task. Here’s what our garden looks like now!
Isn’t that much better?! We will have a 5′ x 10′ garden next year. We are also planning on planting raspberries along the fence.
So that’s what we’ve been up to during our mild fall days. Have you been working on any fall projects?
I’ve always wanted to plant a small garden too. Kudos to you for taking the first step. I bet your daughter really enjoyed helping you.
Yes, the kids loved helping! Now I have a whole winter to plan what I’ll plant and where!
Yay! We didn’t plant a garden this year since we moved, but I can’t wait to do one next year. How fun to get your daughter involved. Blessings!
My girls loved helping. Surprisingly, the two-year-old was the most engaged!
How exciting!!! I can’t wait until I have a house where I can have a garden!
Yes, I’m super excited! I just have to wait patiently for next spring to plant!
Ok, now you’re making me feel like I need to use our garden next year. We did nothing with it this year…..Looks great!
Have a great week Jennifer!
xoxo
Thanks! I love our garden and I can’t wait to have more veggies next year. It was so exciting that pretty much all summer long we had an endless supply of fresh green beans.
You have a great week too!
xoxo
It looks great! I’m very impressed. Love that you’re planning out a garden!
I’m super excited about it! Now I just have to wait until spring to plant!
I love it! I bet you can’t wait until spring to fill it up!
I know! Spring seems so far away!!!
I never try planting anything. Everything I touch dies but what a transformation. I can’t wait to see something growing in there. :)
I used to be that way. It’s taken years of sacrificial plants to get to this point.
Wonderful! We are in the same boat and hopefully before winter will be putting in our new garden. Now we both can dream all winter about our new gardens :) be well
Yes… I will be dreaming!
I’m not a gardener, but I admire those who are!
It’s a lot of work but to enjoy the “fruits” of my labour is more than worth it!
Well done! I can’t wait to see what you are able to grow.
Yum! Raspberries! I wish our back little patio wasn’t so small! My raised bed garden this year was a total fail because of the lack of sun and over-rained! It’s great your girls get to help out and they also learn about science. Thanks for all your comments on my blog, Jenn!!
What a clever idea! You make homeschooling look so fun and full of hands on learning. Plus you get some help with that garden lol. I cant wait to see the progress and your vision come to life
Hi Jennifer! You must come over with your kids and start in on my side yard! That looks fantastic, and what a teaching tool too. You are teaching a love of nature, and where groceries really come from! That’s wonderful. I bet you all had a great time.
Today feels like Fall is coming, finally, so I did put out a fall wreath on the door. It was hard to make that mental transition when it’s still in the 80’s!
Good to see you here today :)
