Okay, I’m walking a fine line here. Yesterday I ate a cold cut turkey sandwich. What was I thinking? Can I claim temporary insanity?
Throughout my previous pregnancy and this one I have avoided all cold cuts. If I were presented with a cold cut sandwich, I would warm it up to the point of steaming (which is what you’re supposed to do). I knew that Listeria could be a dangerous illness, but for some insane reason, I had that dreaded (but delicious) turkey sandwich yesterday. When I regained my sanity and realized what I had done I consulted Dr. Google and searched:
Listeria and cold cuts
Listeria and deli turkey meats
Listeria and pregnancy
Listeria and 34 weeks pregnant
I immediately regretted it. From what I read, I could have possibly committed suicide and murdered my unborn child… with a deli sandwich. I am stressing out, I think my husband is ready to suspend all Internet privileges for the rest of my life, and I think I’m a hypochondriac because I haven’t been feeling too great today.
Oh, and did I mention that my hubby teases me by singing “Listeria… bacteria….” to the tune of Hysteria by Def Leppard? Yeah… real funny.
So, there it is. I hate myself. I’m freaking out, and I could use a hug right now. Did you eat anything off of the “Pregnancy No-No” list while you were preggers? If so, please regale me with all of the details, so I don’t feel so crappy (as long as your story has a happy ending).
P.S. I recently went out with a group of girlfriends, and one of them had mentioned how “Dr. Google” could be a dangerous thing. I never heard the term Dr. Google before, and I thought it was brilliant. However, here I am, just a week later and I succumbed to the lures of my in house “doctor”, and now I’m suffering the dire consequences of the “knowledge” Dr. Google bestowed upon me.
I can’t think of anything specific I wasn’t suppose to eat during my pregnancies but I don’t think I really worried about it either. Of course, the internet wasn’t so readily available then either. Probably a good thing for me.
But I will tell you, stay away from Dr. Google! I don’t know how many medical people have given me the “lecture” about diagnosing myself based on what’s available on the internet.
You’re worried so it makes every thing snowball. Just relax and enjoy your weekend.
When I was pregnant with Kennedy I ate a Subway turkey, ham and bacon sub twice a week, for the last 6 months of my pregnancy. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to eat it and it was so good! If I could eat at least 24 foot long cold cut sandwiches (and I’m certain that I ate more cold cuts at home) your one turkey sub I’m sure will be fine:)
Feel so much better about yourself – I was obsessed with cold cut turkey sandwiches for both of my pregnancies and ate them regularly (without warming them up). As you have seen, the girls made it through. Oh and I knew full well the risks involved with eating cold cuts. Isn’t that terrible?!?
I ate ham almost exclusively in both my pregnancies. It was one of the only things I could keep down! Thank goodness I had no idea about deli meat…and I also ate brie now and then :)
I love the term Dr Google – hang in there! I ate cold cuts in my pregnancy and all was fine.
Ladies, thanks so much for your stories and words of encouragement!
I feel a little better and I realize that I am the master of freak-outs (it’s a weird personality thing I guess).
However, I won’t be eating anymore cold cut sandwiches for the rest of this pregnancy :)
Well, I am pregnant with #6 and I have never been told not to eat cold cuts. Are my dr.’s messed up? I just had Subway today too and they asked me if I wanted it toasted. I guess it is good that I said yes!
